The idea for an underground link between the United Kingdom and France first arose in 1802, born from frustration at infrequent ferry services and often rough journeys across the English Channel. A dream now realized, the Channel Tunnel, or Eurotunnel, runs for 50 km (31 mi), connecting Calais with the Straits of Dover in the straightest line possible. Boring the tunnel out of the ocean floor took 15,000 workers seven years to complete, and the tunnel officially opened in 1994. Today the tunnel shuttles personal vehicles on a large, hollow vehicle train, passengers on the Eurostar and tons and tons of products on plain old freight trains. Send an Email
